Sold! Auctions at Fairs!
Auctions are common blockbuster hits during craft fairs. Auctions are just that, the usual bidding and all that jazz. You could go for a dramatic auction, or you could go for a simple one. The main theme is players bid to buy something at prices that escalate by the minute, depending on how far the buyer’s budget can stretch.
There are different themes that revolve around auctions, with most themes usually ranging from the esoteric (like very old antiques) to the more outlandish and the weird. If you want to join the auction, then a minimum of at least ten items of interest should be brought. These ten items should be varied and interesting enough to be able to tickle the interest of different groups of people. Auctions are that broad in their scope of stimulating the audience’s fancy.
Auctions require preparation and time, so it is best that you set your booth up and spend as much to make sure that it goes off successfully. A failed auction is both a loss to your money and to your reputation. Advertising and announcing your auction is one thing all in itself, so use as much as a lot of media as possible. Flyers, banners, posters – basically anything that catches the attention and the eye of the general public. Visit the venue, set up everything and make sure that nothing delays the event.
You could contract food stands and vendors to position themselves closer to your site so they could earn more audience and you can retain your own. This would put both parties in favorable positions. Prepare the things you’ll need. Things like placards, the stand, a table for the item (if it’s too big or heavy) and the sound equipment and all that stuff. Prepare if it rains if the fair is located outside.
Auctions are quite popular if you do come across them. The general man would think of it like a rich man’s game, and if the item is within their budget (or if it is relevant to their interests), they will buy it. Be prepared that there would be some leftover items, and that you couldn’t get to sell all of them. That’s okay. Save them for the next auction. But don’t force yourself. If auctioning doesn’t work for you, then don’t force it. If it works for you, then learn strategies and tactics to command the audience. Intensity is key to making people buy stuff.
