How to Save on Import Car Insurance Premiums

Driving an import car? You probably already realized the average car insurance premium rates for import cars are at least 20% higher than standard rates. If you’re driving one, you probably can afford it. But with world economy at its current states, it’s understandable if you’re looking for ways to save on your car insurance rates.

All drivers should carry car insurance. In most states, it is legally required that all drivers have this coverage and even if you live in a state which does not make car insurance mandatory, you should still have this important protection. You could save money on your premiums by carrying just the bare minimum of insurance required by law in your state, though there are other, better ways to reduce your insurance costs.

The following ideas for reducing your import car insurance premiums can also help you to save:

1. Mind the make and model of your car. The car itself is a factor that raises your insurance rates. Import cars are more expensive, ergo, higher premium rates. Older models cost more to insure than newer ones, too.

2. Consider joining an owner’s club. An owner’s club generally will be able to offer lower rates on car insurance since they use their collective bargaining power to secure lower premiums, much like a group health insurance plan provides to its members.

3. Find out if your insurer offers discounts for any modifications you could have done on your vehicle. Many insurance companies will offer discounts on premiums to drivers of imported cars who install features that improve their performance.

4. Look after your no-claims discount. This applies to non-imports as well. When you’re a good driver, rewards actually translate to dollar values so take care of your NCD when you’re offered said discount. If you lose it, you’ll lose what could potentially be the equivalent of several years’ no-claims discount.

5. Add security features to your car. A lot of imported models don’t have many security features installed as standard; and these vehicles are often considered among the most desirable to car thieves. Installing car alarms, tracking systems and other safety features can make you eligible for a discount on your car insurance as well as protecting your property.

People choose imported cars for a variety of reasons; even though they can cost a little more to insure, they often provide excellent fuel efficiency and performance. While the car itself may certainly be worth a little extra expense to you, keep in mind that you could probably paying less for your import car insurance.
